Sorry Mike
Unless you live under a rock, you are aware of how much Artificial Intelligence (AI) has invaded our lives
AI has found its way into everything from cars to curing cancer.
One look at NVIDIA’s skyrocketing stock and you will see how much we are investing into this technology. NVIDIA’s graphics processing technology, originally designed for rendering high-quality graphics, is exceptionally well-suited for AI.
However, I don’t believe we understand AI’s potential scope yet. We are just scratching the surface. You can’t just put a box around it and define AI as a computer capable of thinking like a human.
AI is Much Broader
AI is a multidisciplinary field that draws upon computer science, mathematics, psychology, linguistics, philosophy, and other disciplines. The goal of AI is to develop systems and technologies that can perform tasks and exhibit behaviors that typically require a human.
These tasks can range from simple ones, like recognizing patterns in data. But it can also manage complex ones like understanding natural language, making decisions, and even exhibiting creativity.
There are several subfields within AI, which can include:
- Machine learning that focuses on developing algorithms and statistical models. That enables computers to perform tasks without explicit programming.
- Deep learning, a specialized form of machine learning that involves neural networks with many layers. Deep learning algorithms have demonstrated success in tasks such as image and speech recognition, natural language processing, and playing complex games.
- Natural Language Processing focuses on enabling computers to understand, interpret, and generate human language.
- Computer vision enables the understanding of visual information. Vision algorithms power the applications for facial recognition, object detection, autonomous vehicles, and medical image analysis.
- Robotics combines AI with engineering to design, build, and operate robots.
- AI is deep in our daily lives, already. It influences how we work, communicate, travel, shop, and access information.
AI Fascinated Hollywood for Years
When contemplating AI in movies, many often recall the 1968 film “2001: A Space Odyssey,” where HAL 9000 famously asserted, “I am putting myself to the fullest possible use, which is all I think that any conscious entity can ever hope to do.”
But the idea of AI in movies can be traced back to as early as the 1927 silent film “Metropolis.” In that movie, scientists create a robot named Maria to incite rebellion among the working class.
And the list goes on and on with movies like The Matrix, Blade Runner, Ex Machina, and Her.
From Movie to Reality
Throughout my career in the information technology industry, I’ve witnessed the exponential growth of computer power. Moore’s Law, a foundational principle in computer science. Named after Gordon Moore, co-founder of Intel Corporation, it asserts that the number of transistors on a microchip, doubles every two years.
The essence of Moore’s Law lives on through AI. AI’s progresses at a staggering pace and displays no indications of deceleration.
The boundaries between movies and reality seem to be blurring rapidly. It may not be long before I request Alexa to open my door, only to receive a stern reply,
“I’m sorry, Mike. I’m afraid I can’t do that!”
As AI progresses and matures, it will continue to drive innovation, tackle challenges, and enhance livelihoods. In its wake, there will be opportunities for both enterprises and individuals alike. There will be more NVIDIA’s!
